THOUSAND GUINEAS PRELUDE QUICK FACTS

The Tranquil Star Stakes is the official registered name of this race which is a preparation for the Thousand Guineas to be held at Caulfield. It was named the Tranquil Star in 1990 to honour the former champion mare that is a member of the Australian Hall of Fame.

First held in 1983 at 1600m at Listed level, the race was reduced to the current distance of 1400m in 1990 to coincide with the name change. In 2000 the race was elevated to Group 3 level and in 2013 was lifted to the current Group 2 classification. The race is run under the conditions of set weights plus penalties.

Prizemoney in 2016 is $200,000 with the winner to receive $120,000. The 2015 winner was the Phillip Stokes trained Miss Gunpowder, ridden by Craig Williams. Other winners of this race have included Gregers, Ortensia, Miss Finland, Hollow Bullet and Danelagh.

LEOTIE

Leotie is trained on the track at Caulfield by Henry Dwyer and from her four career starts, two have been at Caulfield resulting in a win and a second placing. Resuming in a 2YO maiden set weights race at Sale over 1100m she was able to secure a comfortable victory by just under two lengths. Second up for the preparation and having her first start as a 3YO, she tackled the G3 Quezette Stakes. Settling at the rear of the field the filly was storming home late and finished a neck away from the win behind I Am A Star. Second-up in a 3YO fillies benchmark 78 over the Caulfield 1400m she started the race favourite in a small six horse field and did not let her supporters down in scoring a 1.25 length victory. WHISPERING BROOK

Trained in Perth by Simon Miller, Whispering Brook had a five start 2YO term and went undefeated throughout. Included in the wins were the G3 Gimcrack Stakes, the G2 Karrakatta Plate and the final run of her season came in the G3 WA Sires Produce Stakes at 1400m. Trialling over 1000m at Pinjarra to prepare for her return to racing, she returned a very sharp trial and an eastern states assault was planned. First-up in the Listed Atlantic Jewel at Moonee Valley over 1200m the filly was allotted the top-weight of 58.5kg under the set weights and penalties scale. Starting the favourite the filly was sent forward from the wide barrier and was able to work across the face of the field to take up the leading role and was looking to lead throughout. Grabbed right on the line she was beaten a head. I AM A STAR

The Shane Nichols trained filly steps out to 1400m for the first time with the three-time winner looking to be a smart sprinter in the making. Winning a 2YO fillies race at set weights plus penalties at Flemington that has proven a good form race, she was then successful in the G3 National Stakes at Morphettville posting a 3 length victory. Resuming after a short spell the filly flashed home from near last at the 400m to win the G3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield defeating Leotie who franked the form with a dominant win at Caulfield. She can be forgiven for her 5th in the G2 Furious Stakes behind Foxplay as it was her first start the Sydney way of going and was run on a heavy 8. Steven King maintains the ride on I Am A Star, having ridden her four times for three wins.

LA LUNA ROSSA

Opening on the sixth line of the UBET market, La Luna Rossa will be second-up in her preparation and having the seventh start of her career. Resuming in Listed company over 1200m on a heavy 8 at Wanganui, the chestnut filly was sent out as an odd-son favourite and had to settle for second when beaten a head. Training partnership Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman have bought the filly across the Tasman with an ultimate goal of the VRC Oaks. Her 2YO season finished in the best way possible when scoring a half-length victory in the G1 Sires Produce Stakes at Awapuni run over 1400m defeating El Sicario and Saracino. Damien Oliver has been booked to ride the Written Tycoon filly at her first Australian start.

THOUSAND GUINEAS PRELUDE INFORMATION

THOUSAND GUINEAS PRELUDE INFORMATION

Run annually at Caulfield Racecourse on the last Saturday of September, the Thousand Guineas Prelude is a Group 2 horse race. Contested over the 1400m distance under set weight and penalty conditions, the event is the female version of the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude. The race is a standout feature on Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes Day and is often used by trainers as a final lead up to the Thousand Guineas, a Group 1 feature worth $500,000 two weeks later. In 2006, the David Hayes trained Miss Finland completed the Thousand Guineas Prelude/Thousand Guineas double, while Irish Lights repeated the effort three years later.

The race was previously known as the Tranquil Star Stakes and was upgraded to Group 2 status in 2013. The Prelude has been a good carnival guide over the years. Third in the Prelude behind Bliss Street in 2011, Mosheen won the Group 2 Edward Manifold Stakes before finishing runner-up in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas and then taking out the Group 1 VRC Oaks. In an unusual campaign, Headway finished fourth in the 2009 edition before being freshened up and winning the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes on Derby Day at Flemington.
