The Toorak Handicap is one of the premier Group 1 races held in early October. Part of Caulfield Guineas Day, it is an open handicap run over 1600m. Given total prize money is $400,000 this is a keenly contested affair, often between those just below elite class. The mile stars normally have their grand final in the $1m Emirates Stakes later in the carnival. First held in 1881, it was originally the Toorak Handicap until 1981, when it was changed to the IXL. Then from 1985 to 1990, it was known as The Elders Mile, before reverting back to the Toorak Handicap.
There have been some notable winners of this race, from The Trump in 1937 to Divine Madonna in 2007 and class mare More Joyous in 2010. A number of horses have scored back-to-back victories in the Toorak including; Saxony (1948/49), Desert Breeze (1952/53), Nicopolis (1963/64), Umrum (1999/2000) and Solzhenitsyn (2012/13). The Group 1 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400m at Caulfield is a perfect lead in the Toorak Handicap, and in the mid-2000s, Barely A Moment (2005) and Regal Roller (2004) won both races. The event is best suited to sprinter milers with a turn of foot, rather than out and out stayers.
