The VRC Sprint Classic or Darley Classic is Victoria’s premier sprint race held on Emirates Stakes Day and is among the best ‘dashes’ on the Australian racing calendar. Formerly known as the Patinack Farm Classic, it pits the best sprinters against each other over a 1200m distance, down the famous Flemington straight. First run back in 1868, it has changed its name and distance numerous times and in 2013 became the VRC Sprint. In 2007, the format was altered from a handicap to weight-for-age and transferred to Emirates Stakes Day to align with the Global Sprint Challenge in order to attract more international horses and the best locals.
Many elite sprinters have won this event, but none more famous than Black Caviar, who saluted in 2010 and 2011. The true test of speed and stamina has found out plenty of horses, but real champions have shone. Names like Vain (1969), Century (1973), Maybe Mahal (1976), River Rough (1983/84), Special (1988), Hareeba (1994), Takeover Target (2004), Miss Andretti (2007) and Buffering (2013) are other high profile winners of the VRC Sprint Classic.
