WAKEFUL STAKES - FOUR FAST FACTS

The Wakeful Stakes is a $300,000 race listed as the second on the Flemington calendar for Saturday afternoon with the winner set to collect the $180,000 purse. The Group 2 race is second cab off the rank and it is restricted to three-year-old fillies. Last year’s winner Ambience eclipsed the field in one of the more impressive performances.

The Wakeful Stakes is considered the main lead-up to the VRC Oaks, which is run five days later over 2500 metres on the third day of the Victorian Racing Club Spring Carnival. The event is actually named after wonder mare Wakeful, who won the Melbourne Stakes three times last century (1901-1903).

The Wakeful Stakes has been run over 2000m ever since 1968 when With Respect saluted and since then, or in fact in Wakeful Stakes history, no horse has ever won consecutive titles. The last runner to complete the Wakeful Stakes-VRC Oaks double was Kirramosa back in 2013, while previous double champions include Brazilian Pulse (2010), Faint Perfume (2009) and Serenade Rose (2005).

Odds and previews are available for all the major Spring Racing Carnival races at UBET's Spring Racing Betting Hub.

TIAMO GRACE

Trainer Darren Weir has only had one VRC Oaks runner previously and he heads towards that feature with Tiamo Grace. Currently second-favourite in the Oaks all-in market, the last step on the path is here in the Wakeful Stakes with the filly opening at $3.80. By the former VRC Derby winner Monaco Consul, getting the distance should prove no problem and she lines up over 2000m for the 2nd consecutive start. From just four career starts she is yet to miss a place last start was given the biggest test of her brief career in the G3 Ethereal Stakes at Caulfield. Jumping from gate 3 Dean Yendall had the filly settled quietly mid-field on the rail. As the field cornered into the straight she looked for a run but got flattened and lost vital ground. It was not until the last 100m she forced clear and sprouted wings to finish... read more Trainer Darren Weir has only had one VRC Oaks runner previously and he heads towards that feature with Tiamo Grace. PRETTY PUNK

Another runner by a former Derby winner, Pretty Punk is trained at Adelaide by the Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas partnership and is sired by Macdonald’s 2008 Derby winner Rebel Raider. Stepped out to 1400m when third-up this campaign on a track rated a heavy 8, she was a dominant winner in breaking her maiden in a fillies and mares set weights event, winning by eight lengths. The filly made it successive wins when taking on the Listed Hill Smith Stakes at Morphettville at set weights and defeated the ‘boys’, being one of two fillies in the race with Morvada finishing 3rd. At his next start Morvada was beaten a half-length by Sacred Elixir in the Moonee Valley Vase. Pretty Punk was then taken to Geelong for the Listed Geelong Classic and worked home strongly to finish 3rd behind Captain Duffy, beaten just over one length.

SEBRING DREAM

Since resuming in her 3YO season, Sebring Dream has started four times and although yet to win or place, each run has been in Listed or Group company. Resuming in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes at Moonee Valley over 1200m she was positioned at the tail of the field and ran home from the rear to be five lengths from the winner. Second-up in the Thousand Guineas prelude of the G2 Tranquil Star at Caulfield she returned a better effort when just under two lengths from Legless Veuve. In the G1 Thousand Guineas she couldn’t run-on after settling at the rear. Out to the 2000m of the G3 Ethereal Stakes she started the favourite and was hitting the line strongly, finishing on well from the rear. Getting to the expansive Flemington track appears to suit and from two previous runs there the Hayes/Dabernig trained mare has a win and a... read more Since resuming in her 3YO season, Sebring Dream has started four times and although yet to win or place, each run has been in Listed or Group company. THE ROUGHIE

WATERLOO SUNSET

Opening on the seventh line of the UBET market, the Hayes/Dabernig trained filly has faced the starter five times, with all five coming in the same preparation. After placing at her first 2 career starts, she was able to break her maiden in a 1400m set weights event at Pakenham, when ridden on the pace and finishing too strongly to take victory by a neck. The efforts at her first three starts were enough to put her up in grade to the G2 Edward Manifold Stakes over the 1600m at Flemington. Finishing strongly from the rear she was able to finish in third place behind Serenely Discreet, beaten two lengths. Beaten in that race was Eleonora who won the G3 Ethereal Stakes at her next start, defeating the favourite for this race, Tiamo Grace. Her most recent start came in the G3 Norman Robinson Stakes behind Good Standing, where she... read more Opening on the seventh line of the UBET market, the Hayes/Dabernig trained filly has faced the starter five times, with all five coming in the same preparation. WAKEFUL STAKES INFORMATION

WAKEFUL STAKES INFORMATION

The Wakeful Stakes is a Group 2 race held at the famous Flemington Racecourse during the Melbourne Spring Carnival. One of the main events on Victoria Derby Day, it is a race for three-year-old fillies, contested under set weights plus penalties conditions. Over 2000m, this race is a test of stamina and will give a good indication if the filly can stay. For many trainers and connections, this event is considered the main lead in to the VRC Oaks, with a number of Wakeful winners going on to score in the Oaks some five days later. The race is named after the champion mare Wakeful, who dominated the sport in the early 20th Century.

Quality fillies generally line up in the Wakeful, usually after competing in the Group 2 Edward Manifold or the Group 1 Thousand Guineas. In 2011, Atlantic Jewell won the Caulfield Guineas/Wakeful Stakes double, while in 2010, Brazilian Pulse placed in both the Edward Manifold and the Thousand Guineas, before taking out the Wakeful and the Crown Oaks. In 2013, Kirramosa became the 13th filly to win the Wakeful/Oaks double since 1978. Other talented females to enjoy success in the Wakeful Stakes include; Tuesday Joy (2006), Serenade Rose (2005), Hollow Bullet (2004), Grand Archway (1998), Research (1988), November Rain (1980) and Light Fingers (1964). The first winner was Protea in 1932.
