Melbourne Cup 2016

Dubbed the Melbourne Cup, this $6m Handicap, over 3200m dates back to 1861, when won by Archer. He was also successful the following year. Australia’s ‘great race’ had a great trainer – the legendary Bart Cummings. With a record 12 wins on the first Tuesday in November, James Bartholomew Cummings well and truly earned the nickname of ‘Cups King’. If JB Cummings is the Cups King, then Makybe Diva is the ‘Cups Queen’ having won the two-mile classic a record three times (2003/04/05). She carried a mares’ record of 58kg to victory when completing the ‘triple treat’.

JAMEKA - TIP #1

Jameka has already created some records this season and will likely need to create some more if she is to win the Melbourne Cup. Last start in the Caulfield Cup she became the first mare to win the VRC Oaks at 3 and win the Caulfield Cup in the next season. Just eleven horses have completed the Caulfield/Melbourne Cup double in the same year and in Jameka’s favour, the last two that have achieved the feat were both 4YO mares- Ethereal and Lets Elope. The other hurdle she needs to overcome is a weight carrying record for a 4YO mare. After receiving a penalty for her win in the Naturalism Stakes, she was given another penalty for the Caulfield Cup win and with the weights raised in the race, she will be carrying 54.5kg. Ciaron Maher has reported that the mare has trained on well since the Caulfield Cup as... read more Jameka has already created some records this season and will likely need to create some more if she is to win the Melbourne Cup. HARTNELL - TIP #2

The English import has gone to a new level this season for trainer John O’Shea with three wins and two second placings from his five starts. The two placings came behind the wonder mare Winx, in the Cox Plate where she destroyed the field with Hartnell hanging on for 2nd and at the first start this campaign in the G2 Warwick Stakes over 1400m. The Godolphin owned gelding has a win over the 3200m trip in the Royal Ascot Queens Vase when carrying 58.5kg. At his first Australian campaign in the Autumn of 2015 he was successful at G1 level in THE BMW. Last Spring he was 5th in the Cox Plate behind Winx and then finished 15th in the Melbourne Cup. The 6YO was a dominant winner of the G1 Turnbull Stakes defeating Jameka by more than three lengths, before she went on to take the Caulfield Cup.

BIG ORANGE - TIP #3

The 6YO gelding has the experience of having travelled to Australia for the 2015 Melbourne Cup. His 2015 campaign into the Melbourne Cup came via victory in the G2 Arqana Stakes over 2400m at Newmarket, followed by a win in the G2 Goodwood Cup over 3200m, with his final lead-up at York when well beaten. In last year’s Melbourne Cup when carrying 55.5kg he was a brave 5th after leading the field and fought on to be 2.5 lengths from the winner. The Michael Bell trained gelding has started just four times since last year’s Cup and placed on each occasion. Carrying 57kg he was 2nd in the G2 Dubai Gold Cup at Meydan in March and one month later was 3rd in the G2 Jockey Club Stakes at Newmarket. Freshened he then won the G2 Princess of Wales with James McDonald taking the ride.
