2016 AFL Season | Odds & Betting

The 2016 AFL season will kick off in late March with its traditional football bonanza over the Easter long weekend. On Thursday March 24th, traditional rivals Richmond and Carlton will do battle in the season opener in front of what should be a huge crowd at the MCG. Other notable games form the round include Gold Coast hosting Essendon’s revamped lineup after the off-season from hell, before Geelong and Hawthorn clash at the MCG on Easter Monday as Patrick Dangerfield plays his first game for the Cats.

A wider look at the entire AFL season fixture sheds light on a very significant change towards the end of the season. The AFL has now installed a league-wide bye between the final regular season game and the first week of the finals after wide-spread player resting occurred again last season in the week prior to the finals. This league-wide bye has successfully worked in the NFL and it now potentially leaves a weekend free from football for the league to showcase award ceremonies, all-star games, etc.

The off-season had its fair share of player movements as always, headlined by Patrick Dangerfield’s much anticipated return to his hometown Geelong. The Cats will hope he can return them to their former glory and with a strong side prior to his arrival, they’ve rocketed into contention. The other trade to keep an eye on will be Harley Bennell’s move to Fremantle. There’s no doubt that Bennell has what it takes to become one of the elite players in the competition, but his ill-disciplined ways will be monitored extremely closely. The jury is still out on this one.
