The French Open, often referred to as Roland Garros, is a major tennis tournament held at the Stade Roland Garros in the French capital, Paris. The event is traditionally the second Grand Slam of the year, taking place a couple of months before The Championships at Wimbledon. What makes the French Open considerably different to other Grand Slams is the clay surface. Unlike grass and hard courts, the clay surface allows the ball to slow down and produce higher bounces. For this reason, players who rely heavily on their serving game are often disadvantaged. Pete Sampras, who won 14 Grand Slams throughout his career was so dominant in the sport, however he was never able to win a major tournament on clay. Across the singles, doubles and mixed-doubles draws, prize money is approximately $35m.

When the French Open Men’s singles draw comes out, all eyes focus on one name – Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard is often dubbed the ‘King of Clay’ for his aggression and agility on the clay surface. Between 2005-2014, Nadal won all but one of the French Open men’s singles titles, including five consecutive tournaments from 2010-2014. Only the great Roger Federer has been able to deny Nadal over the past decade, beating Robin Soderling in the 2009 final. Prior to Nadal’s domination, Swedish great Bjorn Borg held the most consecutive French Open wins; triumphing in four straight finals between 1978 and 1981.

If Nadal was the ‘King of Clay’ in the men’s singles draw, American hard hitter Chris Evert was certainly the ‘Queen of Clay’ in the women’s. Evert won a total of seven French Open titles between 1974 and 1986, and was runner-up in a further two finals. Samantha Stosur, who has carried Australia’s hopes on countless occasions in the women’s draw, fell at the final hurdle in 2010, losing the final in straight sets to Italy’s Francesca Shiavone. Other than Stosur, no Aussie women have challenged for the French Open title since Margaret Court and Evonne Goolagong Cawley dominated world tennis.
