Contested in Australia and New Zealand since 1936, the Inter Dominion Pacing Championship is the premier harness racing event of the year. The date and venue for the Inter Dominion changes regularly, with harness racing clubs in Australia and New Zealand vying for right to host blue ribbon harness carnival. Fourteen horses normally contest the final which is traditionally run in March. The winner snares a major slice of the $1m prize purse.
In recent times, the programming and qualification process has changed a number of times. Traditionally, the series was held over a two-week period, with three heats in the first week, one each over sprint, middle and staying distances. The final was contested a week after the final heat, with the club hosting the event determining the length of the race. Usually, the distance would be longer than 2400 metres. Under the current format, qualifying races are conducted in Australia and New Zealand on the same day within a four-hour window to determine the final field. The host club then conducts the final at a major venue, with qualified horses representing various states, territories and provinces (NZ).
A number of the greatest trotters have won this event, including Our Sir Vancelot and Blacks A Fake. In the early 2010’s, Gary Hall’s champion pacer Im Themightyquinn dominated the race, winning three in a row from 2011 – 2013. In 2011, Smoken Up was first past the post, however was stripped of the title after testing positive to the prohibited substance dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO).
