The Monaco Grand Prix, also known as the Monaco GP, is a Formula One race held annually at the Circuit de Monaco in Monte Carlo, Monaco. First staged on April 14, 1929, it has become one of the most anticipated races of the year, with the world’s top drivers competing for a chance to stand atop the podium.
The Monaco Grand Prix was originally part of the pre-Second World War European Championships (the name prior to Formula One World Championships) and was also part of the inaugural F1 World Championships in 1950. The race was first won by Frenchman William Grover-Williams, who was driving for Bugatti at the time. Over the years, the Grand Prix has become so prestigious that it is considered to a form a ‘Triple Crown’ with two other famous races; the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Graham Hill is the only driver who has completed the Triple Crown, having won the Indie 500 in 1966, Le Mans in 1972 and the Monaco GP multiple times. The reason that this title is so elusive, is because each race is in a different form of Motor Racing (Indie 500 is NASCAR; Le Mans is an endurance test for a mix of sports cars and touring cars & the Monaco GP is F1).
There have been many drivers who have dominated at this circuit over the years. Graham Hill was known as ‘Mr Monaco’ in the 1960’s because of his five victories at Monte Carlo (1963 – 1969) and Ferrari great Michael Schumacher has emulated that feat by also taking out the title on five occasions. But it is Brazilian Ayrton Senna, who drove for McLaren, that has won this race more than any other driver, standing atop the podium a record six times.
