The 2016 edition of the National Rugby League kicks off on Thursday March 3rd when last year’s beaten Grand Finalists, the Brisbane Broncos, travel to Pirtek Stadium to take on the Parramatta Eels. Over the next 7 months, teams will battle for a spot in the competition decider on Sunday October 2nd and a chance at the ultimate glory. After last year’s epic conclusion to the season, there’s plenty to live up to this year.
The fixture has been mixed up a little this year, as we’ll get doses of Thursday night football in 18 of the 26 rounds as the league builds towards the next broadcast deal. One of those Thursday night games will be the Broncos and Eels season opener, but the highlight of Round 1 is the Sunday afternoon blockbuster between the Sydney Roosters and South Sydney Rabbitohs. Other initial highlights of the fixture include a huge Grand Final rematch on Good Friday at Suncorp Stadium between the Brisbane Broncos and North Queensland Cowboys. Suncorp will then also play host to a huge double header in Round 10 featuring the Melbourne Storm against the Cowboys, and the Broncos facing the Manly Sea Eagles.
As always, there have been player movements galore throughout the off-season and each team will hope they’ve made the right decision in recruiting who they have. In Round 7, Brookvale Oval will host Kieran Foran as an opposition player for the first time as he brings his new side Parramatta to town. Another huge transfer was that of Sam Burgess coming back to South Sydney, with the Bunnies hoping he can do the job better than he did for the English Rugby Team. The Round 5 clash between the Roosters and Warriors will also make for interesting watching as Roger Tuivasa-Sheck faces his old side for the first time.
