The Spanish Grand Prix is an annual Formula One race held at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Barcelona, Spain. The race is one of the oldest on the F1 calendar, having started in 1913. Originally a production car race, where unmodified cars raced each other, it has become one of the biggest F1 events of the year, attracting the best drivers from around the world.
While these days the Spanish GP is a mainstay on the F1 calendar, it wasn’t always the case. After it was first held in 1913, the race took a sabbatical for over a decade before becoming a staple on the European Racing calendar. When the Formula One World Championship was formed in 1950, the race became a bi-annual event until 1967, when it finally became a regular fixture. Due to its tight corners and narrow straights, the Spanish Grand Prix is widely thought of as one of the more dangerous races of the year.
There have been many great names grace the podium in Barcelona, but none more so than six-time champion Michael Schumacher. For a decade, Schumacher dominated this race. His four championships in a row (2001, 2002, 2003, and 2004) set multiple records, and look unlikely to be broken any time soon.
