Tennis Sydney International

SYDNEY INTERNATIONAL

Formerly known as the Championship of New South Wales and the New South Wales Open, the Sydney International is an annual tennis competition. The event takes place at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre at Homebush each January, generally a week or two prior to the first Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open. The knockout tournament, which has a men’s and women’s singles draw, dates back to 1885, making it one of the oldest tennis competitions in the world.

Charismatic fan favourite Lleyton Hewitt is the most successful male in the tournament, winning on four occasions (2000, 2001, 2004, 2005). Despite ideal lead-ups and being ranked the best in the world, Hewitt was never able to complete a Sydney International/Australian Open double. That feat has been achieved just once in history when American legend Pete Sampras took out both titles in 1994.

European women have dominated this event in recent times, with three quarters of the winners in the last two decades coming from Europe. Before the ‘European Invasion’, US hard hitters Martina Navratilova and Lindsay Davenport were always challenging. A number of women have completed the Sydney International/Australian Open double, including Victoria Azarenka (2012), Justine Henin (2004), Martina Hingis (1997), Martina Navratilova (1985) and Evonne Goolagong Cawley (1977). Eight time Sydney International champion Margaret Court completed the double on three occasions between 1969 and 1973, and the tennis legend now has an arena at Melbourne Park named in her honour.
