WGC CADILLAC MATCH PLAY CHAMPIONSHIPS

The WGC (World Golf Championships) Cadillac Match Play Championships is an annual golfing tournament held under match play conditions. It is a knockout event with a field of 64 players. It offers $9 million in prize money. The event began in 1999, making it one of the youngest tournaments on the golfing calendar.

The Match Play Championships started in 1999 as the WGC- Anderson Consulting Match Play Championships, before sponsorship changed two years later to rename it the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championships, until 2015 when Cadillac become the major sponsor. From 1999 until 2006, the tournament was hosted by La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California, with the exception of 2001 when it was played at the Metropolitan Golf Club in Melbourne, Australia. Since 2006, it has changed venue numerous times, the most recent being the TPC Harding Park, San Francisco, in 2015.

The inaugural tournament was won by Jeff Maggert, who defeated fellow American Andrew Magee by 38 holes. Future Hall of Famer Tiger Woods has won the tournament more than any other player, lifting the trophy on three separate occasions.
