The Winton 400 (Winton SuperSprint) is one of three V8 Supercar Championship rounds held in the state of Victoria. The three-day event is contested at Winton Motor Raceway in the country town of Benalla, approximately 200kms north-east of the state’s capital Melbourne. The race was formerly staged towards the end of the V8 Supercar season. However, with a change to scheduling, the event is now held in mid-May and is now the first race of the season held Victoria, other than the Formula 1 races which don’t count for championship points. The event is raced under Super Sprint conditions, where drivers compete in two 34-lap, 100km races on the Saturday, and one 67-lap, 200km race on the Sunday. Practice sessions are held on the Friday, with qualifying rounds taking place on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The driver to accumulate the most points over the three races is crowned the round winner.
New Zealand V8 legend Jim Richards remains the event’s most successful driver thanks to his early dominance in the 80s and 90s. Richards was crowned Winton 400 champion on four separate occasions, going back-to-back twice in 1985-86 and 1990-91. The Kiwi achieved Winton 400 glory in three different cars; twice in the BMW 635 CSi, once in the Nissan Skyline HR31 GTS-R and once in the Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R. Other drivers to have recorded back-to-back wins at the track include Ford’s Glenn Seton (1993-94) and Holden’s Jason Bargwanna (1999-2000).
The Winton Motor Raceway circuit is a great balance of long and fast straights, combined with twisty, tight bends. The overall length of the track is three kilometres and includes twelve turns.
