Horse Racing | Adrian Knox Stakes

The Adrian Knox Stakes is a Group 3 race that takes place during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. Held on Day 1 of The Championships at the Royal Randwick Racecourse, it a race for three-year-old fillies under quality handicap conditions. The race covers a distance of 2000m and offers prize money of $200,000. The Adrian Knox Stakes may not one of the main races on the day, such as the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap and the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes, but it still attracts some decent horses from across the country. The race is named in honour of Chief Justice of the High Court and former chairman of the Australian Jockey Club, Adrian Knox.

Starting off as a Principal Race in 1948, it became a Listed Race in 1980, before finally reaching Group 3 status in 1986. It is a lead up race to the Australian Oaks, with the winner exempt from ballot for the 2400m staying classic a week later. The Adrian Knox honour roll includes; Light Finger (1965), Leilani (1974), Our Sophia (1985), Circles Of Gold (1995) and Royal Descent 2013. Those to go on to success in the Oaks after winning the Adrian Knox include; Royal Descent (2013), Rena’s Lady (2007), Wild Iris (2004) and Republic Lass (2002).
