Horse Racing | Ajax Stakes

Held annually on Coolmore Classic Day, the Ajax Stakes is a Group 2 horse race run at Sydney’s iconic Rosehill Racecourse. The race is open to all horses and is run under quality handicap conditions over the uncommon distance of 1500m. With $175,000 in prize money for the taking and its Group 2 status on one of the premier events in the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, the race tends to attract horses that have shown potential at previous outings.

The race name has changed a number of times; however it has always been named after the Hall of Fame horse and 1938 Cox Plate winner Ajax. The event was upgraded to Group 3 status in 1984, before being elevated again to be recognised as a Group 2 in 2006. The better class horses often use this event as a lead up to the Group 1 Doncaster handicap later in the carnival at Randwick. Gai Waterhouse’s Grand Armee completed the Ajax/Doncaster double in 2003, while Catalan Opening and Confiscate have won back-to-back Ajax Stakes.
