The Apollo Stakes is a Group 2 thoroughbred horse race run at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse forming a part of the Autumn Racing Carnival. The headline race on Apollo Stakes Day, the event is open to horses of all sexes and ages and is run over the 1400m distance at weight-for-age. The event tends to attract some of the classiest sprinters in Australia and is usually won by gallopers who possess a good balance of speed and endurance. It is often a career defining contest for sprinter/milers or a great launching pad for stayers looking to open their campaigns. Trainers can also gauge whether their charges should stick to shorter distances or progress to longer journeys, or whether they are genuine WFA contenders or progressive handicappers.

Great horses that have claimed the event include; Gai Waterhouse’s iron-horses Desert War (2007), Grand Armee (2005) and Juggler (1997/98), Lonhro (2003), Sunline (2000/01) and champion stayer Beau Zam (1989). In 2014, Appearance followed her victory in the Expressway with a dominant performance in the Apollo. Rain Affair also completed the Expressway/Apollo double in 2012.
