Held annually in mid-February, Apollo Stakes Day is one of the premier meetings during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. The day itself includes a number of quality races, with two Group 2s and two Group 3s. The event was originally run at Sydney’s famous Royal Randwick Racecourse, however it has been held at Rosehill Gardens and Warwick Farm in the past. The Group 2 Apollo Stakes over 1400m headlines the program, with the Light Fingers Stakes, Triscay Stakes and Southern Cross Stakes also prominent features.
With a purse of $250,000, the headline race, the Apollo Stakes, has attracted some of Australia’s champion race horses in the past. Names such as Beau Zam (1989), Triscay (1991), Naturalism (1993), Juggler (1996/97), Sunline (2000/01), Lonhro (2003), Grand Armee (2005) and Desert War (2007) have all been successful in this career defining WFA contest.
