ATC QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES - FOUR FAST FACTS

A Group 1 event held over 2000m, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes is one of six races on the Australian G1 calendar held over the same distance with the same conditions of weight-for-age. Three of those are held in Melbourne, with two in Sydney, the other being the Ranvet Stakes that is held the same day as the Golden Slipper.

As the signature event in The Championships, the total prizemoney on offer is $4m, making it 2nd to only the Melbourne Cup as the richest race in Australia. The winner is set to receive a cheque for $2.4m.

As part of The Championships ballot exemptions were offered to the winners of the 2015 Epsom Handicap and The Metrop and the 2016 Ranvet Stakes, The BMW, Doncaster Mile and ATC Derby. Past winners of the race include It’s A Dundeel, Lonhro, Might And Power, Doriemus more recently and from past eras, Phar Lap, Peter Pan and Tulloch.

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes forms a part of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Odds and previews are available for all the major Autumn Racing Carnival races at UBET's Autumn Racing Betting Hub.

Doesn’t appear too much pace in the race with LEEBAZ, AWESOME ROCK (emergency), FENWAY and DIBAYANI all likely to go forward. OUR IVANHOWE should settle just forward of midfield while the key hopes are likely to be in the second half.

LUCIA VALENTINA looked back to somewhere near her best after winning the Matriarch Stakes last November and confirmed those suspicions with a pleasing fifth in the Group 1 Hong Kong Cup (2000m) a month later. She resumed with an excellent run-on effort when fourth in the Coolmore, running the quickest final 600 metres of the race.

RISING ROMANCE hasn’t done anything wrong this campaign. She closed well in three Victorian runs before a luckless effort in the Group 1 BMW (2400m) won by PREFERMENT who claimed the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) prior on protest.

CRITERION won this race last year and is peaking at the right time on evidence of his third in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) run behind THE UNITED STATES. There wasn’t much between the run of The United States and HAURAKI in the Ranvet and both can win. Hauraki, like HAPPY TRAILS, is in-form but is a query on rain-affected ground.

THE UNITED STATES

Opening a marginal favourite once the final field was announced, the Robert Hickmott trained Irish import has remained steady. Last time out he secured his maiden Group 1 win in the Ranvet Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill with a superb finish defeating Hauraki and Criterion who he meets again. He stamped his arrival last Spring when taking out the 2500m G2 Moonee Valley Gold which earned him a shot at the Melbourne Cup where he finished mid-field. 1st up this campaign the G1 Futurity he produced an eye-catching 5th. After missing the jump terribly he was last turning for home and hit the line strongly, beaten just under 2 lengths. 2nd up in the G2 Blamey Stakes and with the blinkers added, he tracked the rail and hit the front with 200m to run and was collared late by the swooping He Or She, beaten a half-length.

PREFERMENT

A win here will see Preferment land his 3rd consecutive G1 triumph and the 5th at his 21st career start. The $2.4m winner’s cheque will catapult him up the all-time stake-winners list, adding to his already healthy $3.3m bankroll. 1st up this campaign he was a solid 4th behind the champion mare Winx at the 1600m of the Chipping Norton and 2nd up he landed the Australian Cup over 2000m at Flemington in the stewards room after finishing a narrow 2nd on the track. Returning to Sydney over 2400m in The BMW, Preferment settled mid-field and then in a sweeping move went clear at the home turn and held on for a narrow victory. He gets back to 2000m where his record is 5: 3-1-0, his only miss at the distance being last year’s Cox Plate behind Winx. CRITERION

The winner of this race in 2015, Criterion has racked up the frequent flyer points in his 9 starts since last year’s victory. Those 9 runs have been in 3 different countries on 7 different tracks. The last 3 starts of his Australian Spring campaign were a win in the G1 Caulfield Stakes over 2000m, a 2nd to Winx in the Cox Plate and a 3rd in the Melbourne Cup. He then returned to Sha Tin for the 2nd time in 2015, finishing 9th in the G1 Hong Kong Cup over 2000m. This campaign has seen him start twice, 1st up in the G1 Canterbury Stakes finishing last of 7, with the 1300m proving far too sharp for him. 2nd up in the 2000m G1 Ranvet he finished the race nicely in 3rd spot after sweeping 5 wide on the turn and battling well to be 4 lengths from the... read more The winner of this race in 2015, Criterion has racked up the frequent flyer points in his 9 starts since last year’s victory. RISING ROMANCE

Racing at the tail in The BMW, Craig Williams was looking for galloping room in the straight and had to check off heels and change direction twice. Not until after the 200m was he able to give the mare maximum effort and by that stage the margin to the leader was too great and she finished 5th, beaten 2½ lengths. The previous start in the Australian Cup she raced much closer to the speed when finishing 3rd behind Preferment. That run followed a luckless effort in the G2 Peter Young where she was last behind eventual winner Bow Creek on turning for home. Bow Creek stuck to the inside and got the openings to win, while Rising Romance angled wide and got stuck in traffic only seeing clear space with 100m left to run. ATC QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES INFORMATION

ATC QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES INFORMATION

Run annually each April on the Day 2 of The Championships, the ATC Queen Elizabeth Stakes is the premier weight-for-age event of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. The Group 1 event is run over 2000m at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney and its $4 million prize pool makes it the richest race at the carnival. The event is named in the honour of Queen Elizabeth II, and she was present at Randwick in 1954 to witness Blue Ocean claim the race in a record breaking time of 2 minutes and 27 seconds. The race’s name changed in its early stages to the Queen’s Plate, AJC Plate and King’s Cup, but it has kept its current name since 1954.

The ATC announced in November 2013 that this Queen Elizabeth Stakes would become the signature event of the revised Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival to be known as The Championships and the stakes were lifted from $500,000 to $4m. Records of this event date back to 1851, when the Queen’s Cup was won by Cossack. Some equine legends have been successful in this race including Phar Lap (1930), Peter Pan (1933), Tulloch (1958, 1960 & 1961), Tails (1972), Ming Dynasty (1978), Rough Habit (1992), Might And Power (1998) and More Joyous (2012).
