Lonhro is the only horse to secure the George Ryder and the Queen Elizabeth in the same year and the mighty mare will look to add her name to that record board. A win will also see her move to 12 career Group 1 wins, passing Lonhro and moving her into 3rd behind Black Caviar and Sunline. Passing $10m in stake-earnings last start, a win in the $4m event will see Winx create another record by passing the lifetime Stakes earnings of Sunline and move her to second on the all-time Australasian earners list behind Makybe Diva. This race will be the fourth and final start of her campaign with her three wins this prep coming at an average winning margin of 4 lengths. How do they stop the mighty mare? They don’t and we should all watch and enjoy the spectacle of just how dominant she is.
With Winx dominating, UBET have a Winx out offer, with Hartnell leading that market. The Godolphin 6YO has squared off six times under race conditions and finished as the bridesmaid on three of those occasions against the great mare. Resuming in the Apollo Stakes at 1400m, he hit the line strongly to finish best of the chasing runners behind Winx. Second-up into the Chipping Norton it was a forgive run over the mile. Going into the 2000m of the Ranvet last start he was working home well from the rear on the home turn to finish a 3.3 length 2nd to the dominant wet-track win of Our Ivanhowe. His only run on the Randwick 2000m was a 6 length demolition job in the G2 Hill Stakes last Spring. Getting back to a dryer track will certainly assist the chances of Hartnell and he shapes nicely as an anchor for 2nd in the $500k guaranteed trifecta pool with UBET.
Happy Clapper was the only runner making any ground in the closing stages of last week’s Doncaster, running the long priced winner It’s Somewhat to a half-length. The 6YO gelding went into the Doncaster with a strong win in the Newcastle Newmarket at 1400m at his previous start. The Pat Webster trained runner was second-up for the prep at Newcastle following his return at Canberra where he lumped 60.5kg from the widest gate to hold 2nd in the National Sprint. Webster has set the gelding on a similar campaign to 2016 where he was 2nd in the Doncaster to Winx third-up and then went to the Queen Elizabeth for his final run of the prep when four starts in. Last year saw the gelding finish 3rd behind Lucia Valentina and if successful will join Road To Rock who was also a 2nd in the 2010 Doncaster before taking out the QE Stakes.
Damien Oliver has been called up to ride The United States and the leading hoop will be looking to secure back-to-back victories in the race after snaring the call-up on Lucia Valentina in 2016. Oliver also rode Fawkner for Hickmott and Team Williams in the 2015 Cox Plate, the only time the Macedon Lodge operation have had a runner race against Winx in her career. The 7YO will be like many in the field and attacks this race fourth-up in his prep, similar to his 2016 attack on this race when coming to this race following success in the Ranvet. In 2017 the entire made his first Sydney appearance in the Ranvet where he was four lengths from the winner Our Ivanhowe in holding onto 3rd position. Last year he finished 2nd in this race and with a drier track working in his favour, Oliver will chase his sixth success in the race.
A Group 1 event held over 2000m, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes is one of six races on the Australian G1 calendar held over the same distance with the same conditions of weight-for-age. Three of those are held in Melbourne, with two in Sydney, the other being the Ranvet Stakes that is held the same day as the Golden Slipper.
As the signature event in The Championships, the total prizemoney on offer is $4m, making it 2nd to only the Melbourne Cup as the richest race in Australia. The winner is set to receive a cheque for $2.34m.
As part of The Championships ballot exemptions were offered to the winners of the 2016 Epsom Handicap and The Metrop and the 2017 Ranvet Stakes, The BMW, Doncaster Mile and ATC Derby. Past winners of the race include It’s A Dundeel, Lonhro, Might And Power, Doriemus more recently and from past eras, Phar Lap, Peter Pan and Tulloch.
The Queen Elizabeth Stakes forms a part of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.

Run annually each April on the Day 2 of The Championships, the ATC Queen Elizabeth Stakes is the premier weight-for-age event of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. The Group 1 event is run over 2000m at Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney and its $4 million prize pool makes it the richest race at the carnival. The event is named in the honour of Queen Elizabeth II, and she was present at Randwick in 1954 to witness Blue Ocean claim the race in a record breaking time of 2 minutes and 27 seconds. The race’s name changed in its early stages to the Queen’s Plate, AJC Plate and King’s Cup, but it has kept its current name since 1954.
The ATC announced in November 2013 that this Queen Elizabeth Stakes would become the signature event of the revised Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival to be known as The Championships and the stakes were lifted from $500,000 to $4m. Records of this event date back to 1851, when the Queen’s Cup was won by Cossack. Some equine legends have been successful in this race including Phar Lap (1930), Peter Pan (1933), Tulloch (1958, 1960 & 1961), Tails (1972), Ming Dynasty (1978), Rough Habit (1992), Might And Power (1998) and More Joyous (2012).
