Horse Racing | Epona Stakes

The Epona Stakes is a Group 3 race held on Golden Slipper Stakes Day during the Sydney Autumn Carnival. The race takes place alongside other Group 3 races such as the NE Manion Cup and the Birthday Card Stakes. It covers a distance of 1900m and it’s a race for fillies and mares at set weights plus penalties. Starting off as a support event to the Golden Slipper Stakes named the Mares Plate in 1998, it became the Epona Mares Quality Plate in 1999, before changing to the Epona Stakes in 2005.

For the 2014 season, it was changed to the Percy Sykes Tribute Stakes in honour of the late Dr Percy Sykes, a well-respected veterinarian who was instrumental in Tommy Smith’s record-breaking 33-year reign as Sydney’s premier trainer. The race was originally an unlisted race until it was elevated to a Listed Race in 2001, before becoming a Group 3 in 2012. It is best suited to quality females heading towards the Group 1 Storm Queen Stakes, the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes or even the Group 1 ATC Australian Oaks.
