Horse Racing | Newcastle Newmarket Handicap

The Newmarket Handicap is a Group 3 race which takes place during the Sydney Autumn Carnival. The event is run over a distance of 1400m, under quality handicap conditions, with a minimum of 54kg. It tends to attract a talented field of gallopers as it offers a prize pool of $125,000. In the past, the Newmarket Handicap has generally been a handy lead up to more prestigious races such as the Group 2 Ajax Stakes.

First contested as a Principal Race in 1955, it became a Listed Race in 1979, before reaching Group 3 status in 1992. In 2009, Solo Flyer was successful in the Newcastle Newmarket before taking out the Group 2 Ajax. Other handy winners of this strong provincial Quality Handicap include Comrade (1990), Secret Savings (1997), Crawl (2001) and Patezza (2005).
