The Pago Pago Stakes is a Group 2 race which takes place during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival at Rosehill Racecourse. A race for two-year-old colts and geldings, it is run over a distance of 1200m at set weights. Named after the champion two-year-old Pago Pago (the first interstate winner of the Group 1 Golden Slipper in 1963), the Pago Pago started as a Principal Race in 1978, before achieving Group 2 status in 1987. The winner of this race receives an automatic entry into the Golden Slipper and is the last chance for the young males to qualify for the Slipper the following weekend.
Only two horses have won the Pago Pago/Golden Slipper double; Rory’s Jester (1985) and Stratum (2005). However, some Aussie turf legends have won this event including; Grosvenor (1982), Rory’s Jester (1985), Zedative (1988), Shogun Lodge (1999) and All Too Hard (2012). Souchez was the winner in 2016 for trainer John O'Shea.
