Horse Racing | Phar Lap Stakes

The Phar Lap Stakes is a Group 2 horse race for three-year-olds that is run annually in the middle of March. Named in honour of arguably one of the greatest horses in history, Phar Lap, the race is a feature on Coolmore Classic Day, one of the biggest events at the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. Held at Sydney’s illustrious Rosehill Racecourse, the event is run over the 1500m distance and often attracts a group of talented gallopers with even bigger targets ahead in the autumn.

Ever since its inauguration in 1973, the race has been run over the uncommon distance of 1500m, except for 2008 when it was run over 1550m at Canterbury Park Racecourse. Some of the talented gallopers on the Phar Lap Stakes honour roll include; Luskin Star (1978), Solar Circle (1990), Thorn Park (2003), Shania Dane (2005) and Apache Cat (2006).
