Horse Racing | Princess Stakes

Also known as the Percy Sykes Stakes and the Keith Mackay Stakes, the Princess Stakes is one of the richest Group 3 horse races in the country. The event is held annually in mid-April on the second day of The Championships, the premier event of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. The race is for two-year-old fillies and is run under set weight and penalty conditions. Its $500,000 prize purse attracts only the best young sprinters Australian racing has on offer to contest 1200m event at Sydney’s Royal Randwick Racecourse. Young horses that have competed in other high quality female-only races, such as the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes, usually go on to participate in this feature.

Classy competitors who may have competed in the Group 1 Golden Slipper and may not be suited by the 1400m Sires’ Produce or the 1600m Champagne Stakes would look at this event in the hope of adding some black type success to their CV. In 2014, Eloping finished 7th in the Slipper before leading all the way to beat Ygritte and Shaumari in the Princess Stakes. Topline mare Streama was successful in the event in 2011.
