Horse Racing | Takeover Target Stakes

The Takeover Target Stakes is a Group 3 race held at the beautiful Gosford Racecourse during the Sydney Autumn Carnival. On the same day as the Gosford Gold Cup and The Belle of the Turf Stakes, the Takeover Target often attracts handy sprinters from the city and country. Warwick Farm trainer Joe Pride won successive Takeover Target Sprints in 2011 and 2012 with Title and See The World. Tamworth’s Sue Grills prepared Border Rebel for a popular victory in the event in 2010.

The race is named after Takeover Target, a sprinter who won major races across Australia, the UK, Japan and Singapore and catapulted his trainer, Queanbeyan taxi driver Joe Janiak, to international fame. Purchased by Janiak for $1,250 (plus GST), Takeover Target won 21 of his 41 starts (eight at Group 1 level) amassing more than $6m in prize money. The son of Celtic Swing won this event in 2004 at his fifth race start when it was known as the Pacesetter Stakes.
