Held at Rosehill Racecourse, the Group 1 The BMW Stakes is held under weight-for- age conditions over 2400m. It is the only Group race on the Australian turf calendar that is held under those conditions at 2400m.
The race has had some name variations over the years and is officially registered as the Tancred Stakes. It has also been named the BMW International Stakes and the Mercedes Classic, before becoming simply The BMW in 2002. It was upgraded to Group 1 status in 1980.
In 2016 the race will carry total stakes of $1,500,000 with the winner to receive $900,000.
The winner of the Ranvet Stakes gains a ballot exemption for this race, while The BMW winner will receive a ballot exemption for the 2016 Queen Elizabeth Stakes and also the Sydney Cup.
Past winners include Ethereal (2002), Tie The Knot (1999 & 2000), Might And Power (1998), Octagonal (1996 & ’97).
The BMW forms a part of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Odds and previews are available for all the major Autumn Racing Carnival races at UBET's Autumn Racing Betting Hub.

Winning the G1 Australian Cup at his last start in the stewards room, the Chris Waller trained star, will look to breakthrough for his first win at Rosehill at his 3 rd attempt. He loomed strongly in the Australian Cup when racing on the speed and with the lack of on pace runners in this race, he may be the one to amble forward again from his good draw and look to control the race. He will be 3 rd up this preparation and was successful over 2000m in the G1 Turnbull Stakes last Spring when 3 rd up and if successful will be the 8 th G1 win of the season for the Waller/Bowman combination.
Also 3 rd up this preparation, Our Ivanhowe has been right in the market from when the prices went live with UBET. 1 st up in the G2 Peter Young Stakes over 1800m at Caulfield, he worked home well after missing the jump to finish 2½ lengths from the winner Bow Creek. He would have finished closer if able to secure clear track as he ran into dead ends at a vital stage. 2 nd up in the Australian Cup he was still whacking away down the stretch to finish 1½ lengths from Preferment. He finished 3 rd in the 2015 Caulfield Cup when 3 rd up over 2400m and is a 3 time winner over the distance, twice at G1 level in Germany.
Returning a better performance in the G1 Ranvet last Saturday, Mongolian Khan gets out to his preferred distance of 2400m. 2nd up in the Ranvet he looked to be travelling well at the 400m but when the swoopers made their charge he was left a bit flat-footed. He should strip fitter from the effort now that he has had the 2 runs back since his Melbourne Spring campaign was derailed with illness. From 3 starts at 2400m, Mongolian Khan has 3 wins. Those wins have been in the G1 NZ Derby, the G1 ATC Derby and the G1 Caulfield Cup.
In the small 10 horse field, Rising Romance is equal on the 4 th line of betting and may offer some value with her record at 2400m. Over the 12 furlong journey she has, as a 3YO finished 2 nd in the G1 NZ Derby and won the ATC Oaks and at 4YO placed 2 nd in the Caulfield Cup. Finishing 2 nd in the G1 Mackinnon Stakes in 2015, beaten under a length by Gailo Chop, her Spring campaign ended with a disappointing last in the G2 Sandown Classic when sent to the post as a narrow 2 nd favourite. Showing improvement at each run this campaign as the distances have been stepped up, the Hayes/Dabernig trained mare fought on well to hold 3 rd in the Australian Cup.
Held annually during the Golden Slipper Festival at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, the BMW Stakes is one of the greatest weight-for-age horse races on the Australian racing calendar. Originally registered as the HE Tancred Stakes, the race is contested over the distance of 2400m and is rated the premier feature event for stayers at the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. With a purse of $2.25 million dollars up for grabs, the event attracts the best stayers in the country and from abroad. In recent times, earlier autumn races such as the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes have proved to be a good guide on how this race will pan out, with Silent Achiever claiming both races in 2014.
Other greats that have won the BMW Stakes include Makybe Diva, Might And Power, Kingston Town and Hyperno. Back-to-back victories have been recorded by Tie the Knot (1999/2000) and Octagonal (1996/97). Younger horses have a great record in the event with 24 of the past 32 winners aged three or four.
