The bloodstock agent that organised the sale of Our Ivanhowe to Australia said he is the “best horse in the world” on heavy going. Leading in to last week’s Ranvet Stakes, the 7YO stallion had started 13 times under race conditions in Australia and had yet to strike a heavy track. Those 13 starts had seen the entire record a G1 win in the 2000m Doomben Cup a 3rd in the Caulfield Cup and a 2nd in the 2500m G3 Bart Cummings. He finally got a heavy track in the Ranvet and despite being first-up since the Melbourne Cup, he dominated his opponents to record a three length victory over Hartnell, displaying how much the track condition suited. It was a superb training performance by the Freedman’s to have Our Ivanhowe primed for that return and now they are looking to repeat their efforts, having him back up just one week later.
The Busuttin/Young trained Tavago had his first look at Rosehill in the G3 Sky High Stakes over 2000m at his latest start when carrying 58kg under the set weights plus penalties scale. He was second-up into the Sky High and after settling mid-field from barrier three when Blake Shinn asked him to go, he sprinted sharply to forge clear and score an impressive three length victory over the well supported Antonio Giuseppe. Last Autumn at 3, the gelding secured the ultimate pay-day when successful in the Australian Derby at big odds. Returning in the Spring he was quickly turned out again after two sub-standard runs in the Feehan and then the Underwood. He has returned in much better order and the Sky High win followed a tidy effort behind Winx in the Chipping Norton at 1600m. Tavago is 1 form 2 at 2400m that win coming in the ATC Derby.
The Darren Weir trained Humidor will be looking to replicate the deeds of Preferment in 2016 and secure the Australia Cup/ The BMW double in consecutive starts. If he is successful he can join two other illustrious performers who were the last to secure that double in Makybe Diva and Octagonal. Starting a narrow second-favourite behind Jameka in the Australia Cup, the 4YO was still last on the home turn, but when angled to open track by Damian Lane, he let down into the bridle and produced a superb turn of hoof to reel them in and go past to score a half-length victory. The 4YO resumed from a break back in January with his debut for Weir was in the Listed Barton Stakes over 1400m. The Australia Cup was his first win since joining Weir and the 4YO is 1 from 1 on the heavy and his record on soft is 7:2-3-1.
The VRC Oaks winner gets out to 2400m for the first time this prep and trainer Lee Curtis has indicated that the filly will be going forward in the run. In the Oaks, a daring plan to lead out and create a break-away was effected and the bold move paid dividends when the filly secured a 3.75 length victory. Jockey Brenton Avdulla let the filly roll along, well clear of the chasing pack and with a lead that was possibly as large as 15 lengths at one point, she did tire in the home straight, but they were tired chasing her and she held on for victory. This prep has seen the filly ridden back at her return in the Apollo Stakes and then in the Chipping Norton at 1600m, she wheeled in front and it was only the mighty Winx that was able to get past her. How far in front will Avdulla let the filly roll?
Held at Rosehill Racecourse, the Group 1 The BMW Stakes is held under weight-for-age conditions over 2400m. It is the only Group race on the Australian turf calendar run at a mile and a half under the conditions of weight-for-age.
It has had some name variations over the years and is officially registered as the Tancred Stakes. The winner of the Ranvet Stakes gains a ballot exemption for this race, while The BMW winner will receive a ballot exemption for the 2017 Queen Elizabeth Stakes and also the Sydney Cup.
Total prizemoney on offer in 2017 is $1.5m with the winner to receive $877,500. The 2016 winner was the Chris Waller trained Preferment, ridden by Hugh Bowman. Other past winners include Hartnell, Makybe Diva, Ethereal, Might And Power, and the dual winners Tie The Knot and Octagonal.
The BMW forms a part of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
Odds and previews are available for all the major Autumn Racing Carnival races at UBET's Autumn Racing Betting Hub.
Held annually during the Golden Slipper Festival at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, the BMW Stakes is one of the greatest weight-for-age horse races on the Australian racing calendar. Originally registered as the HE Tancred Stakes, the race is contested over the distance of 2400m and is rated the premier feature event for stayers at the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. With a purse of $2.25 million dollars up for grabs, the event attracts the best stayers in the country and from abroad. In recent times, earlier autumn races such as the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes have proved to be a good guide on how this race will pan out, with Silent Achiever claiming both races in 2014.
Other greats that have won the BMW Stakes include Makybe Diva, Might And Power, Kingston Town and Hyperno. Back-to-back victories have been recorded by Tie the Knot (1999/2000) and Octagonal (1996/97). Younger horses have a great record in the event with 24 of the past 32 winners aged three or four.
