Horse Racing | The BMW Stakes Day

With the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival constantly being tinkered with, BMW Stakes Day is now one of the premier race days on the calendar. It features nine races, eight at group level, and boasts prize money of around $2.84m. Headlining BMW Stakes Day is the Group 1 BMW Stakes, with the winner of the weight-for-age race pocketing a share in the $1.5 million on offer. The $400,000 Storm Queen Stakes is the second Group 1 of the event, along with numerous Group 2’s and 3’s also run on the day. Those include the Emancipation Stakes, Tulloch Stakes, Doncaster Prelude, TL Ballieu Handicap, Star Kingdom Stakes and the Neville Sellwood Stakes. The main event of the day, the BMW Stakes was first run in 1963 and won by Maidenhead.

The race has always been contested over 12-furlongs or 2400m, bar for 1964 when it was held over 10-furlongs. It was elevated to Group 1 status on 1980 and is very popular with punters because of the quality of horses it attracts and the fact that favourites have a very good record. In fact, 14 of the past 32 winners have started favourite or equal favourite, with nine victors starting at double figure odds. A number of modern day equine superstars have been successful on this day including; Tuesday Joy (2008), Makybe Diva (2005), Tie The Knot (1999/2000), Might And Power (1998), Octagonal (1996/97), Bonecrusher (1986), Kingston Town (1980) and Hyperno (1978).
