Horse Racing | The Championships Day 1

Day 1 of The Championships is Australia’s richest race day held at the famous Royal Randwick Racecourse. It features four Championship races; the world’s richest open sprint, the TJ Smith Stakes, the world’s richest mile, the Doncaster Mile, the Group 1 Australian Derby and the Group 1 ATC Sires Produce Stakes. In all, the 10 race programme boasts $9.89m in prize money, with $3m reserved for the time-honoured Doncaster. But this massive day isn’t just for punters and racing enthusiasts. Day 1 of The Championships is when Sydney’s socialites come out in numbers.

With Fashions on the Field taking the main stage, the hats and frocks make their way to the Eastern Suburbs of the Harbour City. There is little colour to be seen at this prestigious event, as the Championship opening is traditionally a black and white affair. Aside from the first-class racing and elegant fashion, the day offers a wide range of entertainment - from live music to competitions. Whether you come for the horses or just to have a great day out, this is definitely a must to mark on the calendar.
