Previously known as the Todman Stakes, the Todman Slipper Trial is a Group 2 horse race restricted to colts and geldings aged two. It is the male equivalent of the Group 2 Reisling Slipper Trial, and also features on one of the biggest events of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, Randwick Guineas Day. The race is run under set weight conditions at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney over the 1200m sprint. The event always groups together some of the quickest two-year-old colts and geldings in the country to fight it out for a share in the $300,000 prize money. One of the most significant things the winner of this race gains is automatic qualification into the $3.5 million Group 1 Golden Slipper, the richest race for two-year-olds in Australia.
Gai Waterhouse’s Pierro completed the Todman/Slipper double in 2012. He also won the ATC Sires Produce and the Champagne Stakes to won the Sydney ‘triple crown’. Queenslander Phelan Ready finished second behind Real Saga in the 2009 edition of the Todman Slipper Trial before his barnstorming victory in the Golden Slipper. Other classy winners of the Todman include; Luskin Star (1977), Marauding (1987), Tierce (1991), Octagonal (1995), General Nediym (1997), Exceed And Excel (2003) and Criterion (2013).
