The Tulloch Stakes, also known as the Carringbush Cup, is a Group 2 horse race that features on BMW Stakes Day, one of the leading features at the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival. The race, which had its origins in 1973, is restricted to three-year-old colts and geldings and is run over the 2000m distance at set weights. With a purse of $175,000, the race attracts good quality gallopers. However it is also used by trainers and owners as a final hit out before the Group 1 ATC Australian Derby (2400m).
The event is named in honour of champion New Zealand stallion Tulloch, who as a three-year-old in 1957 won 14 out of 16 races he competed in. Great horses that have won the event in the past include; Starcraft, Mahogany, Harris Tweed and Shogun Lodge. Horses which have won the Tulloch and gone on to success in the Group 1 ATC Derby include; Durbridge (1991), Mahogany (1994), Ivory’s Irish (1995) and Starcraft (2004). Earlier champions to win the Tulloch include; Balmerino (1976) and Ming Dynasty (1977).
