Horse Racing | Wenona Girl Handicap

The Wenona Girl Handicap is a Group 3 race that is held on Randwick Guineas Day. Taking place during the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, it is a mares’ quality event and has a prize pool of $150,000. Covering a distance of 1200m, it favours sprinters. It attracts handy mares rather than the elite, with most winners being handy types capable of shouldering hefty weights.

Run of the same day as the Group 1 Randwick Guineas and the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes, it was elevated from a Listed Race to a Group 3 in 2013. In 2014, Peter Moody’s A Time For Julia followed a second placed effort behind Red Tracer in the Group 2 Millie Fox Stakes (1300m) with victory in this event as the $4 favourite. Top class mare Beaded was successful in the 2010 edition of the race.
