Horse Racing | Bill Ritchie Handicap

Held annually on one of the biggest days of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, George Main Stakes Day, the Bill Ritchie Handicap is a Group 3 Handicap. The event is for horses aged three-years and upwards and boasts a prize pool of $125,000. The race is run under handicap conditions over the 1400m distance at Sydney’s prestigious Randwick Racecourse. Horses that compete in this race tend to have their eyes on the Group 1 Epsom Handicap, a $500,000 Open Handicap held at the same venue over 1600m.

In 2013, Chris Waller’s talented gelding Boban claimed the Bill Ritchie Handicap in impressive style, before going on to take out the Epsom Handicap just two weeks later. The event was originally known as the AJC Squatter’s Handicap before changing its name in 1994 to honour prominent New South Wales racehorse owner-breeder Bill Ritchie.
