Horse Racing | Cameron Handicap

The Cameron Handicap is a Group 3 race held on Cameron Handicap Day during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. It is conducted at the Broadmeadow Racecourse in Newcastle, over a distance of 1500m. A rare group event at the Newcastle Jockey Club’s Spring Carnival, it is an Open Handicap and offers $150,000 in prize money.

Originally a Listed Race, the Cameron Handicap attained Group 3 status in 2005. The race is named in honour of James George Cameron for his lifelong dedication to Newcastle racing. Local hero Luskin Star won the inaugural Cameron Handicap in 1977, while other notable winners include Excellerator (2002), Adam (1998), Flitter (1993) and Manawapoi (1978).
