CHELMSFORD STAKES QUICK FACTS

First held in 1895, the Chelmsford Stakes has featured in many distance and venue changes since the inaugural edition was taken out by Newman. Originally conducted at 9 furlongs or the equivalent of 1800m it has never been held further than that distance, but has been run as short as 1400m. Since 2008 the race has been held at 1600m and is held at weight-for-age conditions.

The race was a principal race from 1895 up until 1979 and in 1980 it was granted Group 2 status, a level it has maintained since. In 2016 the race will be held at Randwick, with Sydney’s premier track hosting the race since 2013. Randwick has hosted the race across various years, with Warwick Farm and Rosehill having also held the race.

Total prizemoney on offer in 2017 will be $250,000 with the winner to receive $142,000. The 2016 winner was the John O’Shea trained Hartnell, ridden by Sam Clipperton. Other winners throughout the history of the race include Complacent, Theseo, Intergaze, Might And Power, Filante and the dual winners Hawkspur, Lonhro and Kingston Town.

18
THE MIGHTY MARE
Winx has won her past 18 starts in succession

CHELMSFORD STAKES FORM

  • VERDICT: WINX-Are there any superlatives left in the dictionary to describe the wonder mare? After bombing the start when resuming in the Warwick Stakes, she was devastating in finishing hard to arrive in time to score. Such is her dominance there will be no tote takeout with UBET on the Chelmsford Stakes.

  • THREAT: LASQUETI SPIRIT-Is there a threat to Winx? Probably not. That said Lasqueti Spirit was second-up at the mile in the Autumn over 1600m at Randwick, the same scenario as she faces in the Chelmsford. That day she finished 2nd to Winx, can she repeat the dose.

  • MARKET MOVER: RED EXCITEMENT-The Gerald Ryan trained 8YO was first-up in the Warwick Stakes when finishing 4th to Winx. A three-time winner at the mile, there has been strong support for the gelding to run a place, firming from $3.30 to $2.70 by Friday morning.

TEMPO

  • Should be some good tempo in the early stages as they look to settle into stride.

  • Chocante likes to get forward and from barrier 9 can be ridden hard to find the front .

  • Red Excitement will look to press forward and can get just in behind the speed.

  • Lasqueti Spirit was ridden further back in the Rowley Mile when resuming. More likely to see her sent forward here.

  • Winx can settle just off the pace and Bowman will be looking to avoid being boxed-in.

CONSIDER

  • The last time a mare was successful in this race was in 2008 and just 3 have been able to win the race since 1990.

  • Chris Waller has won this race on 3 occasions. He has also trained the beaten favourite on 3 occasions.

  • Waller trains half the field, saddling 6 of the 12 runners.

  • Sense Of Occasion is a 3 time winner first-up, the last time when winning over this track and trip in the Villiers Stakes.

  • The winner of The Metrop- could come from this race. A number of runners in this are likely to head that way with Antonio Giuseppe, Life Less Ordinary and Allergic near the top of UBET's all-in market.

FACTORS

  • There will be no tote-takeout on this race for UBET tote customers.

  • Winx will aim for her 19th successive win, Hugh Bowman can make it 16 straight aboard the great mare

  • The royal blue silks of Godolphin have won the past two editions of the race.

  • Winx will race in ear-muffs for the first time. A cross-over nose band has been added to Libran for the first time.

EARLY BIRD

  • Not a lot of early activity on the race owing to Winx dominating.

  • Winx opened at $1.08 and there has been no shortage of activity at that quote, including $2,500 and $1,000 at the price.

  • Red Excitement has been well tried in the place market, firming from $3.30 to $2.70.

  • Both Lasqueti Spirit and the veteran Who Shot Thebarman have been specked to run a place at $10.
