Held on Stan Fox Stakes Day in September each year, the Colin Stephen Quality is a Group 3 Open Handicap for horses of all ages. Held during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, the event is run over 2400m at Sydney’s Rosehill Racecourse, with prize money of $125,000. As history shows, horses aiming for the Group 1 Metropolitan, a $400,000 race held on the final day of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival at Randwick Racecourse, tend to use the Colin Stephen Quality as a final lead up. In 2005, Darren Beadman rode the Michael Moroney trained Railings to victory in the Colin Stephen Quality before jumping back on the gelding a week later to repeat the dose in the Metropolitan.
Others to complete the double in recent times include Dress Circle (2001), Coco Cobana (2000), Vita Man (1999), Heart Ruler (1997) and Hula Flight (1996). The race is named in the honour of former Australian Jockey Club Chairman Sir Colin Stephen, who died in 19378. For over a century, the race was staged at either Warwick Farm or Randwick. However its home has been Rosehill ever since 2011. Some of the more notable winners of the Colin Stephen Quality include; Gunsynd (1972), Roman Consul (1968), Delta (1950/51), Rogilla (1933/34), Phar Lap (1930/31), Limerick (1927/28), Gloaming (1924), Wakeful (1902), Carbine (1890) and Trident (1887).
