Horse Racing | Epsom Handicap

The Epsom Handicap is a time-honoured Group 1 Handicap for horses aged three-years and older. Held at the Royal Randwick Racecourse during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, it covers a distance of 1600m and offers $500,000 in prize money. The feature race of Epsom Handicap Day, it is staged alongside other prominent Group 1 races, the Metropolitan Handicap and the Flight Stakes. First run back in 1865, it is one of the oldest races on the Australian Racing Calendar and named after the famous Epsom Downs Racecourse in the South of England.

Some great milers have won the Epsom Handicap, including Chatham, Gunsynd and Super Impose, who was also a dual winner of the autumn equivalent, the Doncaster Handicap. Other notable winners include; Desert War (2004/05), Excellerator, Shogun Lodge (2000), Filante (1996), Dalmacia (1982), Imposing (1979), Sky High (1961) and Shannon (1945). Between 1997 and 2012, trainer Gai Waterhouse dominated this event saddling up seven winners.
