The Flight Stakes is a Group 1 race for three-year-old fillies, held under set weights conditions. It is part of the Epsom Handicap Day which takes place during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. Covering a distance of 1600m, it favours fillies with stamina, especially in the last 200 metres. With $400,000 in prize money up for grabs, it attracts some of best fillies from across the nation. It is part of a tremendous card which includes the Group 1 Epsom Handicap and the Group 1 Metropolitan.
Originally a Principal Race in 1947, the Flight Stakes gained Group 2 status in 1979 before finally becoming a Group 1 in 1985. The race is named after the Australian Hall of Fame mare Flight, who was won the Cox Plate in 1945 & 1946. Some of Australasia’s best young ladies have won this race including; Streama (2011), More Joyous (2009), Samantha Miss (2008), Sunline (1998), Triscay (1990), Research (1988) and Bounding Away (1986).
