Horse Racing | George Main Stakes

The George Main Stakes is a Group 1 horse race run at Sydney’s prominent Royal Randwick Racecourse. The event headlines the program on George Main Stakes Day and is the premier weight-for-age race at the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. It is run over the 1600m distance, with a purse of $350,000 up for grabs. The event consistently attracts the best middle distance gallopers in the country. Horses which contest the George Main Stakes tend to go on to compete in the Epsom Handicap, a Group 1 event held on the last day of the carnival at the same track.

The winner of the George Main Stakes gains automatic qualification into the $500,000 Epsom Handicap. In 2013 and 2012, Streama and Shoot Out both claimed the George Main Stakes before going on to finish second in the Epsom Handicap. The last horse to complete the George Main/Epsom double was Racing To Win (2006). The honour roll for the George Main Stakes also includes More Joyous (2010), Shogun Lodge (1999), Durbridge (1994), Vo Rogue (1989), Campaign King (1987), Baguette (1971), San Domenico and Shannon (1946/47).
