Horse Racing | George Main Stakes Day

Held annually in late September, George Main Stakes Day is one of the premier events at the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. Headlining the Randwick Racecourse event is the Group 1 George Main Stakes, the premier weight-for-age event of the spring in Sydney. The day is named in honour of former chairman of the Australian Jockey Club George Main. George bred racehorses and ran sheep in Cootamundra, a grazing area on the southwest slopes of New South Wales.

A number of greats have taken out the George Main Stakes in the past, including Kingston Town, Emancipation and Lonhro. Also run on George Main Stakes Day are Group 2s the Hill Stakes, The Shorts and Tea Rose Stakes as well as the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap.
