Horse Racing | Gloaming Stakes

Featuring annually on Stan Fox Stakes Day, the Gloaming Stakes is a Group 3 horse race for three-years-olds. Held each September at Sydney’s Rosehill Racecourse, the event is run over the middle distance of 1800m, at set weights. With a total prize pool of $200,000, the race tends to attract talented three-year-olds which may be heading towards tougher staying assignments later in the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival or even the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival. Gallopers that enter this race usually have their eyes set on the Group 3 Caulfield Classic, a 2000m race held on Caulfield Cup Day, or the Group 1 Victoria Derby, a 2500m classic held at Flemington later in the spring.

The Bart Cummings trained champion stallion So You Think won the Gloaming Stakes in 2009, before going on to take out the $3 million Group 1 W.S Cox Plate later that spring. The race is named in honour of the Dick Mason trained champion Gloaming, a gelding who boasts a record of 67 starts for 57 wins and 9 second placings. Other high profile Gloaming winners include; It’s A Dundeel (2012), Predatory Pricer (2008), Tie The Knot (1997), Brave Warrior (1994), Stargazer (1989), Sky Chase (1987), Grosvenor (1982) and Kingston Town (1979).
