The Golden Rose Stakes is a Group 1 horse race for three-year-olds held annually at Sydney’s Rosehill Racecourse. The event, run under set weight conditions on the Golden Rose Stakes Day, is one of the premier events for three-year-olds and is the first Group 1 at the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. Originally named the Peter Pan Stakes, the race is run over the 1400m distance and consistently groups together some of the most talented youngsters in the country. The event, inaugurated in 1978, was upgraded to Group 2 status in 2002 before achieving Group 1 status in 2009 when taken out by Denman. Horses that compete in the Golden Rose Stakes usually use Group 3 races like the Run To The Rose and Up And Coming Stakes as lead ups.
Hallowed Crown (2014), Denman (2009) and Paratroopers (2005) are just some of the horses that have completed Run To The Rose/Golden Rose Stakes double in recent times. In 2007, the race was not held, however it was run twice the following year in August and March. Manawanui (2011) and Court Command (2006) have completed the Up And Coming Stakes/Golden Rose double. This event is often the launching pad for sprinters with Zoustar, Epaulette and Toorak Toff prime examples. Fillies don’t have a great record in this event with Forensics (2008) the only female to win the Golden Rose.
