PREFERMENT

Preferment will be second-up this campaign as he works towards a tilt at a Melbourne Cup for the second successive year. During the Autumn, Preferment was lining up for a shot at his third successive Group 1 win in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes and was well supported to jump as the second favourite. His Autumn began in the G1 Chipping Norton where the 1600m was too short yet he ran well to finish 4th behind Winx. Second-up he was able to land a narrow victory in the Australian Cup at Flemington before returning to Sydney and taking out The BMW. His 4th and final run was his failure in the Queen Elizabeth. Resuming in the Chelmsford Stakes the heavy track and wide gate saw him be too far back to offer a challenge. HARTNELL

Second-up in the G2 Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick, Hartnell opened at $13 in the UBET market once the final field was declared. That price was in a market where Winx was at a $1.20 quote and once the scratching of Winx came through the John O’Shea trained gelding was installed as the new favourite at $2.50. Easing out to $2.80 the money then started to come and it came flooding in for the gelding to see him start as a $2 favourite. With a track rated at a heavy 8 the money was right and Hartnell raced handy to the pace in the 6 horse field and never looked in danger, blowing them away to post an 8 length victory. Stepping out to 2000m here, the 6YO is a two time winner over that distance. Importantly in previous campaigns he has been a third-up winner on three separate occasions.

SIGNOFF

The Darren Weir trained 7YO is the outsider of the seven horse field as he lines up for the third start of his campaign. Starting to get some kilometres in his legs after some lengthy time on the sidelines, Signoff has been ridden from the rear at his two starts this campaign. Resuming over 1400m at Morphettville in the Listed Penny Edition Stakes he sat last in the 14 horse field. Second-up in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes over 1600m, he again sat last and could not get into the race when the speed went on. There looks to be limited pace in the race and jumping from an inside gate can see him get closer to the tempo which has worked for him previously. Weir has applied winkers to the gelding for the first time to try to get him to focus, he is a two time winner... read more The Darren Weir trained 7YO is the outsider of the seven horse field as he lines up for the third start of his campaign.
