Horse Racing | Kingston Town Stakes

Originally listed as the STC Cup, the Kingston Town Stakes is a Group 3 Quality Handicap which features on Golden Rose Stakes Day. Held annually in mid-September, the event is run over 2000m at Sydney’s Rosehill Racecourse. Although the purse of $125,000 isn’t as appealing as other races at the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival, the event is a good hit out for stayers coming from the listed Premier’s Cup and also may be used as a lead up to the Group 1 Metropolitan and Group 2 Colin Stephen Quality.

He’s Your Man, a talented gelding from the Chris Waller stable, managed to notch a Kingston Town Stakes win in 2014 before going on to victory in the Metropolitan a few weeks later. Herculian Prince completed the same double for trainer Gai Waterhouse in 2010. The event was inaugurated in 1946 as a Principal Race, before gaining Group 3 status in 1979. The brilliant Kingston Town was a two-time winner of this event in 1980 and 1981.
