The first Group race of the new racing season in Sydney is the Missile Stakes. The race has featured in some venue changes and was first held in 1978 at Rosehill over 1100m. It was run over 1100m until in 2010 it was increased to the current distance of 1200m. In 2012 the race was held at Warwick Farm for one year and since 2013 has been run at Randwick. Held at Group 3 level from 1980, the race was lifted in status in 2014 to the current G2 level.
Conditions of the race are weight-for-age, with the 2016 edition taken out by Tycoon Tara. Other winners include Burbero, Dance Hero, Lonhro, Guineas, Campaign King and Joanne. In 2017 the race will offer total prizemoney of $200,000 with the winner to receive $115,000.
MISSILE STAKES FORM
- VERDICT: Le Romain- the Kris Lees trained 5YO returns to the track here following a spell and is clearly the class runner of the field as a three-time G1 winner. With a solid first-up record, he has missed a top-two finish twice in 10 starts at Randwick, those coming in both of Randwick's famous mile events of the Doncaster and Epsom handicaps. He hasn't missed a place at 1200m and Glyn Schofield reunites with the gelding that he has ridden twice for 2 victories and a heavy track should be little concern.
- THREAT: Tycoon Tara- the now 7YO mare was a last start winner of the G1 Tatts Tiara at Doomben where she was able to lead them all the way over the 1350m trip. She is drawn to get a good run just behind the speed and has the impressive numbers of 2 from 3 at the Randwick 1200m trip. A winner of this race in 2016, the Snowden trained mare will look to become the 3rd winner of the race in successive years.
- RISK: Jungle Edge- has progressed into a very handy type. Will have conditions to suit with all his 11 wins on rain affected ground and trainer Mick Bell knows how to get a rain dance to convert into the skies opening. Of concern however is his Randwick form. From 3 attempts at Randwick he has placed once and comes into this following a disappointing run in the Stradbroke when beaten 15 lengths.
