The first Group race of the new racing season in Sydney is the Missile Stakes. The race has featured in some venue changes and was first held in 1978 at Rosehill over 1100m. It was run over 1100m until in 2010 it was increased to the current distance of 1200m. In 2012 the race was held at Warwick Farm for one year and since 2013 has been run at Randwick. Held at Group 3 level from 1980, the race was lifted in status in 2014 to the current G2 level.

Conditions of the race are weight-for-age, with the 2016 edition taken out by Tycoon Tara. Other winners include Burbero, Dance Hero, Lonhro, Guineas, Campaign King and Joanne. In 2017 the race will offer total prizemoney of $200,000 with the winner to receive $115,000.

  • VERDICT: Le Romain- the Kris Lees trained 5YO returns to the track here following a spell and is clearly the class runner of the field as a three-time G1 winner. With a solid first-up record, he has missed a top-two finish twice in 10 starts at Randwick, those coming in both of Randwick's famous mile events of the Doncaster and Epsom handicaps. He hasn't missed a place at 1200m and Glyn Schofield reunites with the gelding that he has ridden twice for 2 victories and a heavy track should be little concern.

  • THREAT: Tycoon Tara- the now 7YO mare was a last start winner of the G1 Tatts Tiara at Doomben where she was able to lead them all the way over the 1350m trip. She is drawn to get a good run just behind the speed and has the impressive numbers of 2 from 3 at the Randwick 1200m trip. A winner of this race in 2016, the Snowden trained mare will look to become the 3rd winner of the race in successive years.

  • RISK: Jungle Edge- has progressed into a very handy type. Will have conditions to suit with all his 11 wins on rain affected ground and trainer Mick Bell knows how to get a rain dance to convert into the skies opening. Of concern however is his Randwick form. From 3 attempts at Randwick he has placed once and comes into this following a disappointing run in the Stradbroke when beaten 15 lengths.

  • There looks to be plenty of speed in this race and the pace should be on all the way.

  • Jungle Edge will likely press forward from gate 4 to take up the tempo and joined by The Monstar, That's A Good Idea and Invincible Gem who are all go-forward types

  • Le Romain might look to slide across just behind the speed from his wide gate.

  • Tycoon Tara can sit just behind the pace from her good alley and be poised to strike.

  • The Ramornie Handicap at Grafton has been a good guide to this race in past years. The Monstar was a narrow 2nd in that race.

  • The June and July Sprints have also been traditional guides, Boss Lane took out the July Sprint after being well held in the Ramornie.

  • The last 5YO to win the race was back in 2007, when German Chocolate was successful.

  • Gear changes to note include the winkers coming off Le Romain and near-side blinkers going on The Monstar as well as a tongue tie added and the visor removed.

  • That's A Good Idea will be 2nd-up where his record is 9:2-3-2.

  • This is the first Group race of the new season in Sydney.

  • Held at WFA the only times a 3YO has been successful have been when the race was held in late July. Dance Hero was the last 3YO to win back in 2005.

  • 2 of the last 3 winners have been mares, however that drops off to 3 of the last 10.

  • Tycoon Tara is looking to secure back-to-back victories. There have been three previous winners in successive years, two off those being mares- Joannne and Klokka.

  • Le Romain opened at $2.40. and was in to $2.20 by Thursday afternoon after being well supported.

  • Tycoon Tara was holding steady at her opening quote of $5 and was meeting with some support.

  • Memes has been specked at $16 with some each way action on the in-form mare.

  • That's A Good Idea opened as the outsider at $31.
