Horse Racing | Newcastle Gold Cup

The Newcastle Handicap is a Group 3 Open Handicap that is held at the Newcastle Racecourse. It is part of Newcastle Gold Cup Day which takes place during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. A race for stayers, it covers a distance of just 2300m and offers $175,000 in prize money. Originally a Principal Race back in 1898, it reached Group 2 status in 1981, before dropping back to a Group 3 race in 2001. It is held alongside other prominent Group 3 races such as the Tibbie Stakes.

This event is often contested by horses which ultimately compete in more prestigious races, such as the Group 1 Caulfield Cup, the Group 1 Cox Plate or even the Group 1 Melbourne Cup. Over the years there have been some classy runners in the Newcastle Gold Cup, none more so than the 2012 Melbourne Cup Winner, Green Moon, who won this event in 2011. Aussie turf legends Gurner’s Lane (1982) and Hyperno (1977) were also successful in this race which dates back to the late 1800s.
