More than 3000 people flock to one of the biggest days on the Newcastle Jockey Club’s racing calendar each year. When the sun is shining, there is no better place to be in the Hunter during the Sydney Spring Carnival. The Newcastle Gold Cup Day only comes around once a year, and the town of Newcastle always embraces it. Headlined by the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup, it has become a mainstay for the racing enthusiasts in and around the Hunter Valley. Constant live entertainment means that there is fun for everyone, not just horse racing fans.
In 2012, the feature event, the Group 3 Newcastle Gold Cup, produced a Group 1 Metropolitan winner Glencadam Gold trained by Gai Waterhouse and the Melbourne Cup winner Green Moon trained by Robert Hickmott. Gurner’s Lane also won the Newcastle Gold Cup ahead of his Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double in 1982. Another turf legend Hyperno was also successful in the Gold Cup in 1977 before victories in the BMW and CF Orr Stakes the following year and then Melbourne Cup glory in 1979.
