Horse Racing | Roman Consul Stakes

The Roman Consul Stakes is a Group 2 event held at the famous Royal Randwick Racecourse during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival. It is one of many top class races that take place on Epsom Handicap Day, like the Group 1 Epsom Handicap, the Group 1 Flight Stakes and the Group 1 Metropolitan. The Consul Stakes is a race for three-year-olds over 1200m at set weights. With its short distance and $175,000 prize money, it attracts classy sprinters from across the country. It is named after the champion racehorse Roman Consul, who won the Chelmsford Stakes three times between 1967 and 1969.

First run as a Principal Race in 1979, it finally reached Group 2 in 2005.The Roman Consul honour roll is littered with top notch three-year-olds such as Buffering (2010), Fastnet Rock (2004), Exceed And Excel (2003), Encounter (1997), Anthems (1996), Our Maizcay (1995), Slight Chance (1992) and Red Anchor (1984) who managed to go on to bigger and better things.
