Horse Racing | Run To The Rose

The Run To The Rose is a Group 3 horse race held in the early parts of the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival on The Run To The Rose Day at Rosehill Racecourse.

The event is for three-year-olds and is raced over the 1200m distance under set weight and penalty conditions in late August. As the name of the race suggests, the event is a lead up race to the $1 million Group 1 Golden Rose. It acts as a guide for punters on where a horse is at with its fitness and ability. However, only a few horses in the past have claimed both races. In 2014, the Bart and James Cummings’ trained colt Hallowed Crown came from the back to win the Run To The Rose, before claiming the Golden Rose a fortnight later in similar style.

Others to do the ‘Rose’ double include Denman (2009) and Paratroopers (2005), both trained by Peter Snowden. After success in this race, Dissident (2013), Smart Missile (2011) and Squamosa (2010) finished second in the Golden Rose a fortnight later.

Another notable winner was Gai Waterhouse’s Pierro in 2012. Third behind him was Epaulette, who went on to take out the Rose at his next start.
