SAN DOMENICO STAKES FORM

  • VERDICT: Pariah-The Snowden trained colt will need to overcome a wide barrier, but he looks to be a colt with plenty of potential. At 2, his Blue Diamond run was strong and in the Golden Slipper, the heavy track was against him. His Canonbury win over this trip was strong where he defeated Menari and his trials have been solid.

  • THREAT: Condor Heroes- With two trials under his belt prior to his return to the track here, the Gerald Ryan trained colt has been wound up for his return. In the first trial he posted a six length winning margin over Menari and was 2.5 lengths off Spieth in the second trial. Tim Clark reunites after riding him in his debut in the Breeders Plate

  • MARKET MOVER: Jorda- The Godolphin filly was an early season 2YO winner when taking out the Gimcrack Stakes on debut back in October. Put away after that she has not raced since and has been well tried, firming from a $7 opening quote in to $4.40. Trialing twice, the second a more serious hit-out over 1000m where she was cuddled to the line behind Dixie Blossoms. It was a strong trial and she could surprise.

TEMPO

  • Should be some good tempo here despite the small field size.

  • Another Sin should be going forward and looking to find the front.

  • Madeenaty will likely roll forward and contest the lead with Another Sin, while Condor Heroes was very keen in a recent trial.

  • Pariah will try to settle just in behind them after working across from the wide gate.

  • Chauffeur will be off the pace, while Jorda will be tucked in from gate 2

CONSIDER

  • 6 of the 9 runners will be first-up in their campaigns.

  • Jorda resumes after almost 12 months on the sidelines, last seen in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes .

  • Pariah comes into this on a similar path to the 2016 winner Star Turn. Both raced in the Blue Diamond Prelude/Blue Diamond/Golden Slipper before going for a spell and resuming in the San Domenico.

  • Speed Street is first-up since the Anzac Day Stakes at Flemington and has the blinkers added

  • Another Sin faces the starter for just the 2nd time, having won on debut in a Class 2 Highway Handicap and has a created interest. Lifesaver finished 2nd in that race and contests Race 1 today.

FACTORS

  • This race is the starting point for the Spring campaigns for many of these.

  • Looking for winners deeper into the Spring- traditionally this race has been won by horses that tend to stick to the sprint distances. Past winners fitting this bill include the 2016 winner Star Turn, Gold Edition, Testa Rossa, General Nediym.

  • 2012 was the last time a filly was successful.

  • Pariah's only race win came over this track and trip when successful in the G3 Canonbury- where he beat Menari by one length.

EARLY BIRD

  • Early shoppers will face deductions following the scratching of Tulip of $0.19 x $0.16.

  • After opening at $3, Pariah has been well tried and added with the scratching of Tulip had firmed to $2.30.

  • Another Sin is the best tried in the early markets. After opening at $34 he has been well found and firmed to a $23 quote.

  • Jorda opened at $7 and has firmed to $4.40 including $1,000 x $700 at $6.50/$2.10, with a sprinkling of money for nearly every runner in the field.

SAN DOMENICO STAKES HISTORICAL INFORMATION

SAN DOMENICO STAKES HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Run early on in the Sydney Spring Carnival in mid-August on the San Domenico Stakes Day, the San Domenico Stakes is the second major event of the season. The Group 3 contest is for three-year-old gallopers and is run under set weight and penalty conditions at Sydney’s Rosehill Racecourse. The 1100m event tends to attract horses that are returning to the track after spelling and may use the race as a lead up for bigger contests later in the spring. Gallopers that compete in the San Domenico Stakes are known to go on to contest similar Group 3’s such as the Roman Consul Stakes, Silver Shadow Stakes and Up and Coming Stakes.

Snitzerland claimed the event back in 2012 before going on to claim a couple of Group 2’s later in the spring. A number of highly credentialed horses have won this event in the past including; Gold Edition (2006), Regimental Gal (2003), Testa Rossa (1999), General Nediym (1997), Tierce (1991) and Sir Dapper (1983).
