The Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes will be held at Royal Randwick this Saturday 20 Aug 2016.
Held at Randwick, the Silver Shadow Stakes is restricted to 3 Year Old Fillies, run under the conditions of set weights plus penalties. First held in 1980 at Group 3 level, it was promoted to Group 2 in 1993, was downgraded to Group 3 in 2005 and in 2013 was reinstated at the current Group 2 status.
The race is named in honour of the 1975 Warwick Stakes winner Silver Shadow and is subsequently held on the same race card as the Warwick Stakes. The race is run over 1200m and is currently held at Randwick but has been held at Warwick Farm and Canterbury in previous years.
The 2016 edition will offer total prizemoney of $175,000 with the winner to receive $105,000. In 2015 the Gai Waterhouse trained Speak Fondly was successful with jockey Kerrin McEvoy taking the winning ride. Past winners of the race include Parables, Samantha Miss, Gold Edition, Mnemosyne, Ha Ha and Triscay.

Calliope resumes in the Silver Shadow after completing her 2YO season in the Group 1 Golden Slipper. After jumping from a wide gate in the Slipper, the filly never really got into the race to finish well down the track, around 9 lengths from the winner. Leading in to the Slipper she had won two of her three race appearances. Starting her season in the Spring in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes, she was a 2 length winner on debut. Sent for a break she resumed in Melbourne for a Blue Diamond Prelude, finishing under 2.5 lengths from Samara Dancer. Returning to Sydney, her final run prior to the Golden Slipper was in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes, where she missed the start by over one length but followed the rail to drive through into a mid-field position and then sprinted sharply and held off a fast-finishing Omei Sword.
A member of the all-powerful Chris Waller team, Omei Sword resumes after a three start 2YO campaign. Her career began with a win on debut in a 2YO fillies maiden handicap at Rosehill over 1100m. Carrying 56.5kg with Hugh Bowman aboard, the filly finished the race off nicely in running a 33.71 closing 600m sectional. Her next target was the G2 Magic Night Stakes where she once again finished the race off strongly, just missing in running down Calliope. The final start of her 2YO season was in the G1 Sires Produce where she was ridden much closer to the speed out of circumstance. Sticking to the rails she momentarily looked to have hit the front but was soon overpowered in finishing 7 lengths from the winner. Waller has sent the filly to the trials three times to prepare for her race return, the latest she missed the start but ran home nicely without being tested.
Opening on the 2 nd line of the UBET market, the Michael Costa trained filly comes into the Silver Shadow as a winner at her career start. Having two trials to prepare for her debut, she was a seven length winner on each occasion, in a 793m trial at Warwick Farm and a 900m trial at Rosehill. Taken to Scone for the Listed Woodland’s Stakes to make her first race appearance she was shuffled back to near-last at the 600m. The widest runner as they straightened for the run to the judge, the filly let down strongly to land an assertive 1.5 length victory. Trialling twice to prepare for her return as a 3YO, the second trial was a nice effort when sticking to the inside on a soft 7 when all other runners were wider on the track in the hit-out won by Impending.
From five career starts, the Tony Gollan trained filly was successful at each of her first three outings. Opening her career in a 2YO handicap at Doomben where she led all the way in posting a 4.5 length victory as the favourite, she was able to go back-to- back in the Listed Calaway Gal, again leading all the way. With an eye on the Magic Millions the filly bought up the hat-trick when taking out the G3 B J McLachlan Stakes. In the Magic Millions she drew a wide gate and battled into a well-beaten 9 th place. Looking a tired horse she finished last in the G2 Riesling, beaten 5 lengths behind French Fern. Tony Gollan has reported that she spelled in good order and has performed to expectations in jump- outs. Tommy Berry will take the ride with the filly on the 7 th line of the UBET market after opening at $19.
